What is BRAT Diet
BRAT is an acronym for Banana, Rice, Applesauce & Toast. BRAT diet is a nutritional approach by the doctors to lower the infection of intestine commonly known as stomach flu. The main idea behind BRAT food is to give a chance to stomach/intestine to rest and lower the production of stool.
Why BRAT Diet:-
The BRAT diet foods are prescribed for both adults as well as for children which is easy to digest. The BRAT diet contains low fiber, easy-to-digest foods ex. Bananas, Applesauce, Rice, and Toast. it is also prescribed for the people who are recovering from illnesses which involve diarrhea and vomiting.
What you should Eat??
The idea of the BRAT Diet is that the soluble fiber in the recommended foods will keep the bowels moving in a slower, but regular manner, and cause less pain, bloating, and gas.
Food to Eat during BRAT Diet
BRAT Foods allow to consume only fout foods i.e ; Banana, Rice, Applesauce & Toast. But it also depends upon body like child OR adult.
Foods Allowed on the BRAT Diet are:-
- White rice
- Toast made from white bread
- Soda crackers Clear liquids including water, weak tea, broth, juice
- Electrolyte containing beverages
Foods to Avoid on the BRAT Diet are:
- Meat, fish and poultry Eggs
- Dairy products
- Fruits other than bananas and applesauce
- Nuts and seeds
- Whole grains
- Beans and legumes
- Beverages that contain caffeine
- Carbonated beverages
Advantages of BRAT Diet
BRAT diet is very useful during digestive illness, as it is very easy to digest and do not give extra pressure in the digestion process. This help to decrease diarrhea. Although there, not a research supporting this fact.
Here Banana act as binding agent & gives antidiarrheal effect. As per research more than 2,900 children with acute diarrhea. it is found that 80% of children who received green bananas experienced resolution of diarrhea within three days, as compared to 53% of children who did not eat green bananas.
Finally, it is found that the green bananas and rice-based liquid foods help to reduce duration and severity of diarrhea.
Disadvantages of BRAT Diet
One of the major disadvantages of BRAT diet is that it does not provide the sufficient nutrition to the body to recover from illness.
The BRAT diet is very low in protein, fat and other nutrients that are needed for proper healing. Here is the nutritional content of the usual diet of a two-year-old versus the nutrition of the BRAT diet.
- Protein: 70% lower on the BRAT diet
- Calories: 300 fewer calories on the BRAT diet
- Fat: 80% lower on the BRAT diet
The BRAT diet was also shown to provide far less than the Reference Daily Intake (RDI) for key nutrients involved in healing:
- Calcium: 12% of the RDI
- Vitamin A: 12% of the RDI
- Vitamin B12: 0% of the RDI
Alternatives of BRAT Diet
Now a day there are different alternatives available having higher nutritional values.
CRAM Diet: – It is best alternatives of BRAT diet which means Cereal. Rice, Applesauce, Milk. CRAM Diet said t have more nutritional value because it contains Milk.
Prebiotic fibers: – Prebiotic fibers are fed healthy bacteria. A study shows, diarrhea resolved significantly faster in child and adult who are given probiotics, compared to those given a placebo.
